The Memphis Grizzlies were a tough out in the playoffs, again. That is all they will ever be with this roster constructed the way it is. Yes, they “grind” you on defense, especially at home in the “Grind House” but they just lack the firepower to be serious contenders in the Western Conference. Slide them over to the East and they have a slim shot at dethroning King James. Unlike some of our other, “Gone Fishin'” candidates, there is just not a lot to say on the Grizzlies because they are what you see is what you get. There isn’t a ton of potential on this roster and not enough assets for them to make blockbuster moves. Being in Memphis, Tennessee also limits them in free agency.
The Grizzlies pushed the Spurs to 6 games in the 1st round, but it just always seems to be that way when those two meet up at any point in the season. Memphis is just a team that will give just about anybody in The Association fits in a 7 game series. Think about how they were 2-1 on 2015 World Champion Golden State Warriors. IF and I mean IF this team can find a wing not named Chandler Parsons, this team might be a real contender instead of a team that can just ruffle some feathers come playoff time. This is just a franchise that is extremely neutral and is not trending upward or downward, just the exact same.
With a shade over $74 million committed to Mike Conley, Marc Gasol, and Chandler Parsons for the 2017-18 season, they just do not have the wiggle room to make any moves this offseason. Unless some clown in somebody’s front office wants to eat Parson’s remaining 3 years on his contract. Also factor in the impending free agencies of Zach Randolph, Tony Allen, and JaMychal Green and the Memphis FO has some fairly important decisions to make. Either way the Grizzlies go in resigning or letting those players walk, they will continue to be the same ole’ Memphis of years past next season.
